Every automotive vendor will tell you that you own your data. It's practically a line item in the sales pitch at this point. But the details underneath the promise vary wildly from vendor to vendor. And it’s an issue that has led to almost $1 billion in legal settlements, just in automotive retail.

If you actually want to know what ownership means-- especially before selecting your automotive CDP provider--here are five questions that get you past the marketing language to understand if your vendors offer true ownership or pretty words.
Question #1: “Can I get this in bulk, in a usable format, outside your UI? If so, at what frequency?”
There's a real difference between data you can view in a UI one record at a time, and data you can pull into your own systems, run through your own tools, or feed into AI. A vendor can be telling the truth when they say you own your data and still have a product where the only access point is a human clicking through screens. That's not ownership in any functional sense.
Question #2: “Can this data be sent to my tools and other vendors? If so, is there a cost to my vendors or me?”
This is the biggie in automotive, so you’ll likely need to dig quite a bit to get to the full picture:
These aren't small distinctions. Painful manual processes are often a signal that the vendor is paying lip service to data ownership, but is intent on keeping your data in their silo.
Question #3: “Are you integrated with Foureyes Consent Management?”
This one is pretty immediately telling. More than 100 automotive dealers participate in Foureyes Consent Management. At this point, most website providers, 3rd-party lead providers, and anyone calling, texting, or emailing your customers are integrated. Usually, if they aren’t, there’s a reason.
If they aren’t integrated, ask if they are willing to integrate and when it can be scheduled.
If they are integrated, ask two follow-up questions:
Some vendors are unwilling to send copies of the messages they send to and receive from your customers, believing it is their intellectual property. That’s a real example of where some vendors draw data ownership lines.
Question #4: “What happens to my data when I cancel?”
Ownership means nothing if your data evaporates the moment you cancel. What does data portability actually look like at the end of a contract? Do you get your data, and how: A clean export, a painful manual process, something in between? What does the vendor hold onto after you're gone? Most dealers ask when they're trying to leave, which is exactly the wrong time to find out.
Question #5: What does the contract say?
Set the sales conversation aside and read the contract. What does it say the vendor owns? What do they call out as their intellectual property? This is often where the real answer lives, not in the pitch deck.
"Do I own my data" is the wrong question to lead with, because everyone answers yes. The better questions are about access, portability, sharing mechanics, and contract language — because that's where you find out whether ownership is real or just a phrase.
Data Ownership Sounds Simple. It Isn't.Every automotive vendor will tell you that you own your data. It's practically a line item in the sales pitch at this point. But the details underneath the promise vary wildly from vendor to vendor. And it’s an issue that has led to almost $1 billion in legal settlements, just in automotive retail.
